Requirements for the Conducting master’s program (Orchestral Conducting)
The following requirements apply for the Orchestral Conducting major:
1. Together with the other application documents, a DVD (or URL link) of at least 30 minutes duration must be submitted. This should contain live cinematic concert recordings of the candidate conducting works from two different style periods as well as an excerpt from a rehearsal.
2. Performance audition (piano, melody instrument or voice): Performance of three works from different style periods:
a. An opening movement and a slow movement from a sonata by Beethoven (by heart)
b. A work from the Impressionist period (by heart)
c. An agreed-upon New Music work
3. Piano playing:
a. Prepared: performance of an agreed-upon extensive opera scene from the piano score – performance of an agreed-upon classical symphony movement from the full score
b. Unprepared: sightreading an unknown full score and a reduced piano score
a. Fourth movement, introduction and development section of Brahms’s 1st Symphony
b. Egmont Overture by Beethoven
After positive exam outcomes in points 2, 3 and 4:
5. Work with an instrumental ensemble of the Düsseldorfer Sinfoniker – L'après midi d'un faune by Debussy in the chamber music version for Schoenberg’s Society for Private Musical Performances. A rehearsal of up to 20 minutes.
