Requirements for the Composition master’s program.

The following requirements apply for the Composition major:

I. Artistic Composition major
1. Together with the application materials, a portfolio consisting of several compositions in various genres/instrument scoring.
2. Specialist interview with the examination board (up to 20 minutes).


II. Required elective concentrations

II. 1a Required elective concentration for Conducting, Orchestral Conducting
1. Together with the application materials, submission of a DVD (or URL link) with a live film or audio recording of a rehearsal and/or live performance totaling at least 20 minutes.
2. Piano playing a) prepared: Performance of an agreed-upon major opera scene from the reduced piano score – performance of an agreed-upon classical symphony movement from the full score b) unprepared sightreading of an unknown full score and a reduced piano score
3. Conducting: Conducting an agreed upon work

After positive exam outcomes in points 2 and 3:
4. Working with an instrumental ensemble: A rehearsal of up to 20 minutes. (The work will be specified 4 weeks before the exam date.)

II. 1b Required elective concentration for Conducting/Choral Conducting
1. Together with the application materials, submission of a DVD (or URL link) with a live film or audio recording of a rehearsal and/or live performance totaling at least 20 minutes.
2. Piano playing a) prepared: performance of a larger a cappella work from the full score b) unprepared: Sightreading from unknown full scores
3. Conducting: Conducting an agreed upon work

After positive exam outcomes in points 2 and 3:
4. Work with the RSH vocal ensemble: A rehearsal of up to 20 minutes. (The work will be specified 4 weeks before the exam date.) and conducting an assigned work. (The work will be specified 4 weeks before the exam date.)

II. 2 Required elective concentration for Instrument/Voice
Requirements for the proficiency test which apply for this concentration can be provided by Prof. Hans Peter Reutter, director of the Institute of Composition and Music Theory.

II. 3 Required elective concentration for Music Theory
1. Together with the application materials, submission of a portfolio with various works on music theory (style copies, analyses, teaching concepts, etc.).
2. Specialist interview with the examination board (up to 20 minutes).
3. Tests in Harmony/Aural Skills at level 3

II. 4 Required elective concentration for Media Composition
1. Together with the application materials, submission of a folder with at least two film sequence with varying dramaturgical emphasis from any genre (comedy, action, documentary film, etc.) of about 3 minutes’ duration (as .mov files) as well as at least one media composition of the candidate’s choice (music for games, advertising, audio logo, radio play music, etc.).
2. Specialist interview with the examination board (up to 20 minutes).
