Tobias Wember
Assistant Professor of Jazz Trombone

Born in 1981, Tobias Wember studied Jazz Trombone with Prof. Henning Berg and Jazz Composition and Arrangement with Frank Reinshagen at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln from 2002 to 2008. He was a member of the Bundesjazzorchester (BuJazzO) from 2003 to 2005. Wember has gone on concert tours of Namibia and South Africa with bandleader Peter Herbolzheimer.
Tobias Wember founded the HORNSTROM band together with Klaus Heidenreich in 2006. The ensemble went on to win various awards, including First Prize at the 2007 New Generation Young Talent Competition in Straubing. Endlich Sinnfrei [Finally Meaningless] was the title of the  group’s debut CD released on the Konexx Records label in 2008.

After Tobias Wember moved to the Ruhr Valley, he founded the Essen-based Ensemble Abluft as well as collaborating in projects with the Grillo Theater in Essen. Wember is still actively involved in the Cologne jazz music scene and commutes between Rhine and Ruhr Valley as a musician, composer and bandleader.
He has been a member of the Cologne Subway Jazz Orchestra since 2013. In addition to performing as a trombonist and composer, Wember also serves as music director for Subway Jazz Orchestra projects.In addition to performances by the Subway Jazz Orchestra, his compositions have also featured in concerts by the WDR Big Band, the Essen Jazz Orchestra, the Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra and the Sunday Night Orchestra in Nuremberg.
In January of 2015, Tobias Wember won the WDR Jazz Prize in the Composition category for his suite state of mind. In 2016 Tobias Wember began performing as a trombonist with the Heavytones and began teaching as a sessional lecturer in Jazz Trombone at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt in Weimar.

Tobias Wember collaborates with many concert artists and ensembles, among them the WDR Big Band, Jazzpool NRW, Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, Sunday Night Orchestra, Blassportgruppe Südwest, The Big Jazz Thing, Heiner Schmitz Sins & Blessings, Frederik Koster Jazz Orchestra, Stefan Karl Schmid exTended, Tom Gabel and Band, Matthias Schriefl Big Band, Grillo Theater Essen, Essen Jazz Orchestra, and the Thoneline Orchestra.

The jazz trombonist has been an instructor for the JugendJazzOrchester NRW, Jugend Jazz Orchester Brandenburg, Jugend Jazz Orchester Niedersachsen, Jugend Jazz Orchester Saarland, Jugend Jazz Orchester Sachsen and at the Steinfurt Jazzworkshop.
Tobias Wember started teaching Jazz Trombone at the Institute for Music and Media of the Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf in 2016.
