Alexander-Sergei Ramírez was born in Lima, Perú to a family of artists. After studying guitar with Prof. Maritta Kersting, he continued his studies in Alcoy (Spain) with José-Luis González, the master pupil of the legendary Andrés Segovia, and with Pepe Romero in San-Diego, USA.

After winning the first prize in the international guitar competition Alhambra in Spain, Ramírez gave concerts around the world in solo recitals, chamber music concerts (collaborating with violinists such as Latica Honda-Rosenberg, Renaud Capucon and Daniel Hope, the Amati and Rosamunde String Quartet) and as a soloist in orchestral concerts (performing with the Orchestre Nationale de Belgique, Orquesta Nacional de Cuba and the Musikkollegium Winterthur symphony orchestra), frequently involved in radio and television recordings.

Key achievements of his career to date are performances at the Salzburg Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Rheingau Music Festival, the Semanas Interamericanas in Washington DC, Istanbul Music Festival, Spannungen chamber music festival in Heimbach, Riga Music Festival and concerts in the Great Hall of Salzburg's Mozarteum, the Great Hall of Zürich's Tonhalle concert hall, and the Teatro Municipal in Lima-Perú.

His first four CDs have been released worldwide with the label DENON and have been enthusiastically reviewed by international specialised press: "on all levels...Prime Want List material" (Fanfare), "Spanische Schule par excellance" (Stereo), "there are other fine versions available of the Ginastera Sonata but none better than this one" said John Duarte in Gramophone magazine, and Musikmarkt music journal spoke briefly and succinctly of "Villa-Lobos ultimat!".

Confesión was released under the Deutsche Grammophon label, with works of the Paraguayan composer Agustín Barrios-Mangoré. The editor and critic Matanya Ophee wrote the following about this recording: "... the most spellbinding 75 minutes that I have ever heard." It was chosen as the CD of the month by MusicalWeb. There is now a new recording under Deutsche Grammophon, Odyssey, a "world tour of the guitar", with compositions from 5 continents, "a multivision for the ears and of a brilliant quality" (Akustik Gitarre magazine). This CD was chosen to be the CD of the month by Ecos magazine.

In 2007 Deutsche Grammophon released the CD Masters of the Guitar, which included recordings of Andrés Segovia, Pepe Romero, Narciso Yepes, Paco Pena and Alexander-Sergei Ramírez.

In addition to classical concert guitar he has also developed a love in the past few years for the romantic guitar, which he primarily uses in the duo ensemble for guitar and fortepiano with Sheila Arnold.

Alexander-Sergei Ramírez has taught Guitar at the Robert Schumann School of Music and Media, Düsseldorf since 1997. 

Alexander-Sergei Ramírez is a much appreciated guest at international guitar festivals, gives master classes and is active as a jury member for international guitar competitions.
