Requirements for the Orchestral Instruments master’s program – Cello major
The following works must be prepared for the Performance master’s proficiency test:
For prospective Orchestra majors:
1. A fast and a slow movement from a suite by J. S. Bach
2. The opening movement of a cello concerto of the musician’s choice
3. A movement from a sonata for cello and piano. The piece must be from a different style period than the cello concerto.
4. Three orchestra passages: 1. Ludwig van Beethoven, Symphony No. 5, 2nd mvt 2. Bedrich Smetana, The Bartered Bride 3. Peter Tchaikovsky, Swan Lake, Act 2, No. 13
For prospective Chamber Music majors:
1. A fast and a slow movement from a suite by J. S. Bach
2. The opening movement of a cello concerto of the player’s choice
3. A movement from a sonata. The piece must be from a different style period than the cello concerto.
4. A movement from a chamber piece of the musician’s choice (not a cello/piano duo)
For prospective Music Promotion majors:
a short, artistically prepared introduction (of about 5 minutes) to a work from the program of the proficiency test
The examining board reserves the right to make a selection from the pieces.
