Requirements for the Composition master’s program.

Master of Music / Major in Composition


1. Major in Composition

1.1 Preselection

For the pre-selection, a total of 4 files in PDF format with own compositions / scores must be submitted with the application. The following requirements apply:

  • four own compositions / scores of free choice. 1 PDF file per work sample.

1.1 Presence Examination
The presence examination includes the following parts:

  • Expert discussion on the submitted compositions (max. 60 minutes).

In addition to the compositions, a focal work from the following focal areas must also be submitted.

 


II. 1a Elective Focus Conducting - Orchestra Conducting


1. Preselection
For the pre-selection, 1 uncut video with artistic presentations must be submitted with the application. The total duration of the video should be at least 20 minutes. The following requirements apply:

  • An audiovisual rehearsal and/or concert recording of at least 20 minutes. 1 uncut video.

2. Presence Examination
The presence examination includes the following parts:

a) Piano Performance:

  • Prepared: Performance of a major opera scene from the piano score by arrangement - Performance of a classical symphony movement from the score by arrangement.
  • unprepared: sight-reading of a presented score and a piano reduction.

b) Conducting:

  • Conducting of a work by arrangement

After passing the examinations of points a) and b):

c) Work with an instrumental ensemble:

  • Rehearsal of up to 20 minutes


II. 1b Elective Focus Conducting - Choral Conducting

1. VorauswahlFor the pre-selection, 1 uncut video with artistic presentations must be submitted with the application. The total duration of the video should be at least 20 minutes. The following requirements apply:

  • An audiovisual rehearsal and/or concert recording of at least 20 minutes. 1 uncut video.

2. Presence Examination
The presence examination includes the following parts:

a) Piano Performance:

  • prepared: Performance of a major a capella work from the score.
  • unprepared: Playing from the sheet music of presented scores

b) Conducting:

  • Conducting of a work by arrangement

After passing the examinations of points a) and b):

c) Work with a vocal ensemble:

  • Rehearsal of up to 20 minutes   
  • Conducting a given work


II. 2 Elective Focus Instrument /Vocals

1. Preselection

For the pre-selection, a total of 3 uncut videos showing artistic presentations have to be submitted with the application. The total duration of the 3 videos should not exceed 20 minutes. The following requirements apply:

  • One work from the classical repertoire. 1 uncut video.
  • Two works from the 20th or 21st century (one composed before 1950 and one composed after 1950). 2 uncut videos.

2. Presence Examination
The presence examination includes the following parts:

  • Artistic presentation: the same repertoire requirements apply as in the preselection. The same works may be presented as in the preselection.

The examination board reserves the right to make a selection from the prepared pieces.

II. 3 Elective Focus Music Theory

1. Preselection

For the pre-selection, various music-theoretical works (style copies, analyses, teaching concepts, etc.) must be submitted in PDF format with the application. One PDF file must be submitted per work sample.

2. Presence Examination
The presence examination includes the following parts:

  • Technical discussion of the submitted music theoretical work.   
  • After passing the technical discussion:
  • Written examinations in music theory and aural training at level 3.


II. 4 Elective Focus Media Composition

1. Preselection

For the pre-selection, a total of 3 video files must be submitted with the application. The following requirements apply:

  • At least two dramaturgically different film sequences from any genre (comedy, action, documentary, etc.) of approx. 3 minutes in length. 1 video file per film sequence.
  • At least one media composition of free choice (music for games, advertising, audio logo, radio play music, etc.). 1 file per composition.

2. Presence Examination
The presence examination includes the following parts:

  • Expert discussion on the submitted media composition works.
