Questions about applying

At its Institute For Music And Media (IMM) the university offers two eight-semester bachelor programs: Those in the Music and Media program earn a Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.) Audio and Video, whereas the program offered in cooperation with the Department of Media of the University of Applied Science Düsseldorf(HSD) confers a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.). In addition, two four-semester Klang und Realität and Artistic Music Production master’s programs are also offered.

Do I have to take an entrance exam for the degree programs offered at the Institute For Music And Media?
Yes. For the two bachelor programs Music and Media and Audio and Video as well as for the Artistic Music Production master’s program, you have to be able to play an instrument or sing and submit work samples. In addition, the entrance exam includes tests in music theory and ear training. Applicants must submit a project draft and take part in an entrance exam interview for the Klang und Realität master’s program.

What deadlines do I have to meet for applying to for the bachelor or master’s degree programs?
The application deadline for both Bachelor programs is March 15th of each year. The entrance exam can only be taken in the summer semester for Klang und Realität master’s program candidates. The application deadline is November 1st of each year:

What school or university degree is required for admission to studies?
The bachelor’s degree program in Music and Media requires university entrance qualification, and the Audio and Video bachelor’s degree program requires at least a vocational extension certificate (Fachhochschulreife). The prerequisite for the Klang und Realität master’s program is successful completion of a bachelor’s or diploma degree program or other equivalent and recognized program of study.

What happens if I graduate from high school only in summer?
In this case, the application must be accompanied by the last half-yearly report card. If possible, the grade transcript for high school should be submitted before the entrance examinations. Further information is available from the Registrar’s Office.

Do I have to complete an internship before beginning with my bachelor’s studies?
Yes. Successful completion of an internship of at least six weeks in length must be documented. Practical activities in recording studios, media companies, film productions, post-production companies, advertising agencies, theaters, broadcasters or similar institutions are suitable for this. Written confirmation of completing such an internship can be submitted at a later time. However, such confirmation must be submitted at the time of enrollment at the latest. 

Alternatively, evidence of a period of at least five months of residence abroad (outside the country of origin) with activities relevant to the program of studies may be provided. The relevance to the Music and Media or Audio and Video programs of study must be documented in a written statement (no longer than two DIN A4 pages). This proof must be provided by the time of enrollment at the latest.

What is the difference between the two bachelor programs Audio and Video and Music and Media?
The major in Music and Media is offered by the IMM. Here artistic and creative content predominates. Those completing the program earn a Bachelor of Music. The Audio and Video major is offered in cooperation with the Media faculty of the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf (HSD). Those completing the Audio and Video program earn a Bachelor of Engineering, and its focus is clearly on engineering subjects.

Can I still switch between the two bachelor programs during my studies?
If you have been admitted to both bachelor programs (double application), this is possible on request. In all other cases a consultation with the examination office is necessary.

For example, after completing one of the two bachelor degree programs can I also earn a master’s degree at the IMM?
Yes, the IMM offers the four-semester master’s programs in Klang und Realität as well as in Artistic Music Production. Both courses conclude with the Master of Music.

In what language are classes conducted?
German. Foreign applicants must demonstrate adequate mastery of German. The B2 certificate (according to the Goethe Institute classification system) or a comparable qualification is required.

Can I spend a semester outside Germany during my program of studies?
Yes, both universities ‒ the RSH and the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf ‒ have cooperative arrangements with partners outside Germany. Study abroad must be initiated and organized independently ‒ it is not a compulsory component of the program of study.

When do the entrance exams take place?
The exact dates are specified each year by the Examinations Board. As a rule, these examinations take place in June: Durations of the exams.

How much does it cost to take the entrance exam?
The university charges examination fees for the entrance examinations. The entrance exam fee is waived for students who are already enrolled in one or more courses of study at the Robert Schumann School of Music and Media.
